  • News from 100 Women Who Care: At our most recent meeting we drew 3 names out of the hat and heard wonderful presentations from:

    And then we voted and Healing Voices-Personal Stories was the 1st place winner! We collected $10,000 for them. For those who could not attend, please send your checks in for the 2nd place winner, PARTNERS IN EDUCATION. Mail it to Katie Rountree. If you need her mailing address email her here.

  • Nordic Voices – A six-voice a cappella group, making waves not only in Scandinavia, but in places as far afield as South Africa, Taiwan & Bolivia are here in Santa Fe. St. John’s College, 1160 Camino Cruz Blanca, $20, Fri, Feb 8 at 7:30pm
  • Love Your River Day – Join the Santa Fe Watershed Association‘s River Stewards to pick up litter from the river and arroyos. Meet at the barn. Bring some work gloves—everything else is provided. Each participant will be entered into a drawing with the possibility of winning a great prize donated by Outside Magazine, Watershed Association and other local businesses.   • Santa Fe Film Festival – The annual fest, now in its 20th year, brings together distinguished industry specialists and movie lovers through accessible screenings, panels, workshops and parties.   • Um… It’s an Art Show! Drop-In Art Workshop – View the exhibition and work with Unlocked Minds, Inc.’s lead teaching artists on a variety of kid-friendly projects. You can leave your creation behind to be exhibited or take it home for your very own.   • Journeysantafe: Paul Gibson, of Retake Our Democracy, takes a look at the most important bills in the current legislative session.   • Family Mornings at Folk Art – Storytime Sun, Feb 3 from 11am – 12pm. After storytime, younger children can make their own beaded necklace, and older children make Huichol-inspired beaded bowls. Then do a family treasure hunt to find horses, or explore the last day of the Beadwork Adorns the World exhibit. Free with museum admission, and New Mexico residents get in for free Sun.   • Tax-Aide Santa Fe – SFCC and the AARP have teamed up to offer free (!) help taking care of your taxes. NOTE: This year, you must make an appointment. Call 505-946-3615 or visit sfcc.edu/taxaide to reserve a time. There are some qualifications, and a list of everything you need; get more info when you sign up for a slot. SFCC accounting students who were trained specifically for the service will be among the volunteers available. Higher Education Building, 1950 Siringo Road, Mon., Feb. 4
    8am – 4pm

  • Next Meeting for 100 Women Who Care in Santa Fe is Wed. Feb. 6th at Scottish Rite Temple from 6 – 7 pm. The organizers put the names of local nonprofits in a hat and draw out three then hears a short presentation from each, and then votes; to whichever receives the most votes, every attendee writes a check and raises over $10,000 in one hour. Sounds insane and actually works! Join as an individual for $100 each time, or as a group ($50 for a two-team or $25 for a four-team). But wait, it doesn’t end there: The second-place winner receives money from the members not in attendance (approximately $8,000), and the third-place winner receives money from business sponsors ($1,500). In total, over $20,000 is raised at each meeting. You can come as a guest or members, you can bring a guest. For more info click here. If you’d like a tour of the Scottish Rite Temple, come at 5pm.

  • Ken and Judy (KJ Farms) could use your help! Ken’s doctor presented a grim ultimatum: stop farming and vending at the Santa Fe Farmers’ Market or risk very serious health problems, such as being restricted to a wheelchair. For the last 15 years, Ken and Judy have been selling eggs at the Farmers’ Market. Their last market was on January 26. While bills are piling up and every-day needs are harder to meet, their sudden loss of income makes things insurmountably difficult. The Market community is really strong and we can help! Please lend a hand if you can and give a donation. If everyone pitches in even just a little, we can immeasurably make a very hard time a little easier. Click here to donate.

One Billion Rising: Rise Up Dance 
Sat. Feb. 10, noon at the State Capitol Bldg. 490 Old Santa Fe Trail

Join other pro-woman activists outside the Capitol to dance in celebration of revolution. “We dance because it’s visceral,” the org One Billion Rising writes. “By doing so we get back into our bodies, it connects us to ourselves, we feel the ground beneath us and we can feel the power of the people in front of us and behind us.”

One Billion Rising was created in 2013 in response to the UN statistic that 1 in 3 women will be raped or beaten in their lifetime—that translates, yes, to 1 billion women.

Cool Pick of the Week100 Women logo

100 Women Who Care in Santa Fe Wed. Feb. 7, from 6-7 pm at the Scottish Rite Temple. 463 Paseo de Peralta. (Arrive at 5 if you’d like a tour of the Temple.) During our one-hour meeting, we’ll put names of local non-profits in a hat and pull out three. Each will have 5 minutes to make a presentation. Then we vote and to whichever one receives the most votes, we write our checks for $100 (or you can share the vote with a friend or friends and write your check for $50 or $25) and together we raise $10,000. We invite you to become part of this powerful group and to have a positive impact on those in need here in the Santa Fe area, without the time-consuming effort we all associate with fundraising. (Yes, it IS possible!) Please invite your friends and spread the word.

To date, we have raised $189,216 for non-profits in Santa Fe!

Cool Pick of the Week

SoupThe 24th annual Souper Bowl, a benefit event for The Food Depot, Northern New Mexico’s food bank, goes down in all its liquid-food glory. Your vote decides which of our community’s finest restaurants has the best soups in Santa Fe. Thirty local restaurants will compete in one the following categories – Best Cream Soup, Best Savory Soup, Best Seafood Soup, Best Vegetarian Soup – with all restaurants competing for the Best Soup. It’s soup. Soup!

If you get sick of soup, you can also get desserts, snacks, Starbucks coffee, and have the opportunity purchase cookbooks from area chefs. All proceeds from the event go directly to feeding Northern New Mexicans in need. Sat, Jan. 27 from 12:00pm – 2:30pm $30 Santa Fe Community Convention Center, 201 W Marcy St.
