  • Tax-Aide Santa Fe – SFCC and the AARP have teamed up to offer free (!) help taking care of your taxes. NOTE: This year, you must make an appointment.   • Next Meeting for 100 Women Who Care in Santa Fe is Wed. Feb. 6th at Scottish Rite Temple from 6 – 7 pm. The organizers put the names of local nonprofits in a hat and draw out three then hears a short presentation from each, and then votes; to whichever receives the most votes, every attendee writes a check and raises over $10,000 in one hour. Sounds insane and actually works! Join as an individual for $100 each time, or as a group ($50 for a two-team or $25 for a four-team). But wait, it doesn’t end there: The second-place winner receives money from the members not in attendance (approximately $8,000), and the third-place winner receives money from business sponsors ($1,500). In total, over $20,000 is raised at each meeting. You can come as a guest or members, you can bring a guest. For more info click here. If you’d like a tour of the Scottish Rite Temple, come at 5pm.

  • Ken and Judy (KJ Farms) could use your help! Ken’s doctor presented a grim ultimatum: stop farming and vending at the Santa Fe Farmers’ Market or risk very serious health problems, such as being restricted to a wheelchair. For the last 15 years, Ken and Judy have been selling eggs at the Farmers’ Market. Their last market was on January 26. While bills are piling up and every-day needs are harder to meet, their sudden loss of income makes things insurmountably difficult. The Market community is really strong and we can help! Guns to Garden Tools (For Sale)

All-Tools

New Mexicans to Prevent Gun Violence (NMPGV) wants to take the thousands of unwanted working guns in New Mexico and turn them into shovels and spades for community gardens but they need your help. Would you like to buy one of these COOL Guns to Garden Tools?

They have had six gun buybacks & taken over 400 working firearms out of use & off the streets of NM. The last gun buyback in Las Cruces cost just over $20,000. NMPGV gives gift cards to local grocery stores, gas stations, Target, etc. but not cash, so people can’t go and buy another gun. The cost to buy guns is:

  • $100 for a long gun or pistol
  • $200 for semi-automatic handguns
  • $250 for assault weapons

NMPGV pays artist/iron monger/forger, Tiago Rene Torres de Silva, $60 to make each tool. He has earned over $1,300 so far making Guns to Garden tools.

Wear Your GRACE at 125 E. Palace Ave. has the tools on display and sells them with 100% of the profits going to NMPGV. Call 505-780-5611 or stop by today and buy a garden tool (really a piece of art) in support of this wonderful program. The tools are a bit pricey but now you know why.

Narrative artist Cheri O’Brien has been painting children’s portraits for several years in oil and acrylic paint. These portraits show O’Brien’s interpretation of small children, dreamy, optimistic but somewhat skeptical or wary of this adult world. Ms. O’Brien will be donating 10% of sales to Girls Inc. of Santa Fe.

What is Zozobra made of?  Wood, wire, poultry netting, muslin, nails, screws, pulleys, plywood, shredded paper, spray paint, pizza pans and duct tape!

    Join Recovery Santa Fe in remembering those our community lost in the last year. This year’s event also includes the first few panels of the Overdose Photo Memorial quilt, similar to the AIDS quilt sewn many years ago by mothers who’d lost children to that epidemic.   • Volunteers needed for STEM Santa Fe’s Expanding your Horizons conference on Saturday October 13, 2018 at Santa Fe Community College. We are expecting 200 girls, in 5th-8th grade, from Santa Fe and Northern NM schools to participate. For more details and to sign up click here or contact: Volunteer@stemsantafe.org if you have any questions.   • A message from Katie Rountree:  “Each fall I try to put together a Giving Box which I keep in my car at all times. The box contains items that might be needed by the homeless or someone caught in a sudden rainstorm. I like to keep jackets and gloves in the box because as fall approaches often times the homeless are unprepared for the colder weather and I can just give them a jacket and some gloves on the spot. A box of dog treats are also in my Giving Box because many homeless people now have dogs as companions and what dog couldn’t use a little extra treat? I carry umbrellas because so many people don’t have one handy in a sudden rainstorm. If I see some caught in the rain I can just hand one to them. Other items are band aids, extra water and anything else I think someone could use. If you have any of these items that you no longer need, I would greatly appreciate a donation to the Giving Box. You may bring items to the next Women to Women Lunch on Sept. 12th or email me for pick up. Thank you! Katie
