Santa Fe: Walk with Our Elders -The Santa Fe Walking Collaborative, convened by the Santa Fe Conservation Trust, wants to help Santa Feans walk more; and what better motivation to walk than when you can talk to someone interesting while you do it? Take an easy walk around the park, which also happens to be the location of the Mary Esther Gonzales Senior Center. For more info, check out sfct.org/vamonos.   • Mother’s Day Celebration at the Santa Fe Woman’s Club – The Santa Fe Woman’s Club is having their annual MOTHER’S DAY GIFT FAIR. The proceeds will go to the many charities and college scholarships funded yearly by the Santa Fe Woman’s Club and Library Association. Last year it was a great success, and we expect it will be even better this year.

  • High School Senior Projects from the NM School for the Arts Class of 2019 – Fri Apr 26 Opening Reception for the Visual Arts Senior Exhibit “Ipseity” 6-8pm at 927 Baca Street. Fri & Sat Apr 26 & 27 the Theater Senior Projects will be on stage beginning at 7pm in the Large Rehearsal Hall. The Dance Department’s Senior Projects will be held on Sun Apr 28 at 6pm in the Large Rehearsal Hall.

     

  • One Year Anniversary Paseo Pottery Bash, donating 100% of proceeds to local non-profits. At Tumbleroot, Fri, Apr 26 from 5-8 pm. All in attendance will get to cast a vote for their favorite local charity. At 7pm the chosen non-profit will be announced and will receive Paseo Pottery’s profits for 2019.
  • Jemez Springs Spring Paintout – For the second year, the Plein Air Painters of New Mexico set up their easels at various locations within a 35-mile radius from the beautiful Village of Jemez Springs to work their magic on canvas. The painters will be at these locations this week: Apr 26: Jemez Historic Site (8:30 am-5 pm) Apr 27: Jemez Pueblo Apr 28: Fenton Lake ($5 entry fee) Apr 29: Perea Nature Trail

  • Earth Day Acequia and River Cruise – Community bicycle ride with the Santa Fe Conservation Trust visiting trails, parks and quiet streets down the Acequia Madre and up the Santa Fe River. Cool Mural in Nashville
(I’m on vacation this week)

An abandoned concrete silo looms over a neighborhood in Nashville, which was nearly torn down. Instead, it’s become the centerpiece of the community’s redevelopment.  A 15-story commemorative painting of an elderly man who lived nearly all his life within sight of the silo, was created.

  • Museum of Indian Arts & Culture Earth Day Celebration -Arnold Herrera (Cochiti) presents a traditional blessing at 10 am, followed by Southwest Native American gardening and planting techniques. At 2 pm, head to the indoor auditorium for a discussion on how expansion and illegal waste dumping disproportionately affect communities of color and Indigenous populations. The stories illustrate the fight for environmental justice as communities protect New Mexico’s land and the people impacted by US and corporate-sanctioned actions.   • Hike to the Santa Fe River Canyon – The Santa Fe Botanical Garden hosts a hike into the Santa Fe River Canyon, one of the area’s least-known jewels. The canyon lies just west of La Cienega and features a year-round river due to the many springs in the area. The focus of the trip is the geology of the area and the amazing scenery. The hike crosses the river several times and ends at a beautiful petroglyph plate in the Andesite cliffs. Dress in layers, and bring plenty of water, lunch and sunscreen. Trekking poles and sturdy footwear are strongly recommended. For river crossings, bring footwear appropriate for water to change into. Meet in the parking lot of the La Cienega Community Center, 136 Camino San Jose and proceed the short distance to the trailhead. $5 – $7 Fri, Apr 5 from 10am – 2pm
  • SITE Santa Fe Young Curators: Secrets – This year’s young curators explore secrecy and one’s desire to tell, discover or share unknown information. In their investigation, the students acknowledge that art has an element of secrecy in the way it is open for interpretation; art can be an expression of identity or an invitation for intimacy and introspection that is normally kept private. The theme of secrecy elicits the human urge to learn what we cannot or should not know; what is hidden is appealing. The Vista Grande Public Library (VGPL) will host Santa Fe artist, Roberta Parry, March 2- 30 in the library gallery. “Of Rocks and Trees” features transparent watercolors and some gouache.

The exhibit includes intimate watercolor ‘portraits’ of rocks and trees as they grace and inform our landscape. Parry’s strong yet lyrical paintings reflect her affinity for watercolor and the impact of light and color on her work. She explains, “Color and light are the elements that most strike my sensuous core, and transparent watercolors best capture the vibrancy and translucence of sky, earth, water and all that grows and travel therein.”

The public is invited to meet the artist March 8 from 4 – 6 pm. Light refreshments will be served.

The VGPL exhibition series is for the enjoyment of patrons when visiting the library located south of the El Dorado Community School, on 14 Avenida Torreon. Exhibition art will be on sale by the artist and available to the purchaser after the close of the show. The library will receive a sales commission benefiting operations and library programming.

YOUTH RALLY FOR GUN VIOLENCE PREVENTION LEGISLATION
WHEN: MARCH 8TH 12:00 NOON
WHERE: ROTUNDA OF CAPITOL
PLEASE COME AND STAND WITH GOVERNOR LUJAN GRISHAM AND OUR YOUTH TO DEMAND AN END TO GUN VIOLENCE
OUR YOUTH WILL BEGIN BY HOLDING A DIE IN FOR 6 MINUTES AND 20 SECONDS WHICH IS HOW LONG THE PARKLAND SHOOTING LASTED.
(T-shirts with the names of all children shot and killed in school shootings will be handed out before the DIE IN.)
The Governor and students will then speak about the importance of passing gun violence prevention legislation in New Mexico.
